McGowan Scholars

The McGowan Charitable Fund has established a program, the McGowan Scholars, to provide selected colleges and universities with scholarships to help exceptional students with a demonstrated financial need who wish to pursue a master of business (MBA) education. The Program is based on the experience of William G. McGowan during his college days. Though admitted to Harvard Business School to study for an MBA degree, he did not have sufficient funds to complete his studies. However, he won Harvard's Baker Scholars award that provided the funds necessary for him to earn his degree and launch a successful business career.

The McGowan Scholars program recognizes the academic achievements and excellence of students pursuing an MBA offered by an accredited business school. In addition to financial need successful candidates must have achieved academic ranking in the top 5% of their class, exceptional leadership ability, philanthropic activity, and a significant involvement in campus and community activities. It also recognizes excellence of character, a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial potential.

Colleges and universities with accredited business schools certified by either the International Association for Management Education (AACSB) or the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACSBSP) may apply for the scholarship program. Currently these colleges and universities are located within the geographic guidelines of the fund and include.  The McGowan Fund awards one full tuition scholarship to the student for their final year of the MBA program.  Each school will facilitate the selection of the student in cooperation with the foundation and in accordance with established guidelines.

Special application forms must be submitted by applying schools by September 15 of each year. Applications from eligible schools will be considered by the Board at its meeting each November for scholarships for the following fall admission period.
