![]() This foundational year will identify and select four DCPS Middle Schools as candidates for CIT’s Inspired School program, and provide the candidate schools with a year-long program to lay the groundwork for an Inspired School partnership the following year. The candidate schools selected are feeder schools into those DCPS High Schools supported by the Gates Foundation, exemplifying the McGowan Fund Board’s belief in the importance of a continuum of care process that supports youth through each stage of education. Since 1995, Center for Inspired Teaching has invested in teachers as agents of change in schools. While many school reform movements attempt to transform the conditions in and around schools, Inspired Teaching believes that the key to a school’s turnaround lies in the potential of the teachers inside the building. Over the past 13 years, thousands of teachers have participated in Inspired Teaching’s innovative and highly effective training programs. These teachers are able to take what they learn right back into the classroom. For every teacher who becomes and Inspired Teacher, dozens of children benefit every year, year after year. Inspired Teaching is rooted in the belief that every student possesses the ability to think critically, learn and understand information, and solve complex problems and that students should spend their time in school engaged primarily in these kinds of activities. Inspired Teaching’s programs help educators develop the skills necessary to make this possible by preventing and addressing discipline problems, raising student achievement, and creating a positive classroom and school culture. “An Inspired Teacher teaches students how to think, not just what to think,” says executive director Aleta Margolis. “The ability to think critically and solve complex problems is essential to success in the 21st century. At Inspired Teaching we believe the development of these skills should be the focus of every classroom experience. We are particularly excited about the grant from the McGowan Charitable Fund, which expands Inspired Teaching’s work in middle schools. Many of our staff are former middle school teachers and we are passionate about improving the learning experience for children during this crucial time in their development.” |
