Don Bosco Cristo Rey

Don Bosco Cristo Rey

Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School is the newest high school in the Archdiocese of Washington. It is a unique partnership between the Archdiocese of Washington, the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Cristo Rey Network of Schools. Students come to Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School because they dream of going to college and deserve a great educational opportunity, despite having limited financial resources. Everyone participates in the Corporate Work Study Program where they gain professional work experience and earn money to pay for a portion of their education. In the tradition of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School emphasizes the importance of Faith, Family, Future, and Fun in education. Our teachers and staff know that every student needs a loving, supportive environment in order to succeed. In this environment, students at Don Bosco Cristo Rey will receive new opportunities that help them discover their academic potential and other natural talents.

  • DBCR opened its doors to 127 ninth graders in August 2007. Each year a new class will be added until the school reaches 500 at full enrollment.
  • Small class sizes and structured interaction with faculty and staff ensure all students receive significant personal attention geared to their needs.
  • Most students qualify for free or reduced price lunch programs; more than half come from one of the four quadrants of the District of Columbia; all told, 42 different zip codes are represented.

At Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School, we respect all faith traditions as we teach, model, and celebrate our Catholic Heritage. This faith-based education with an emphasis on character building will help students realize their value and potential as individual creatures of God. Furthermore, Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School is open to all and will not discriminate on the basis of race, color or ethnic origin in its recruitment or admission of students, administration of educational programs or extracurricular activities, or hiring of personnel.

National Archives

A component of the National Archives Experience is the 290-seat William G. McGowan Theater. By day, the McGowan Theater continuously shows a short signature film about the National Archives and twice daily shows a film about the Charters of Freedom. By night, the McGowan Theater becomes the Capital region's most important outlet for documentary film as well as a forum for exploring the great issues of American history and other topics related to the National Archives' holdings and mission.

The Fourth Annual William G. McGowan Forum on Communications, Technology, and Government
Technology, Elections, and Electronic Voting

Ensuring that voting systems accurately record and report voter intent has become a matter of great public concern since the 2000 confusion in Florida. Much of the public debate has centered on the security of electronic voting systems. Are these concerns valid? What are the advantages and disadvantages of electronic voting systems? What can the U.S. learn from experiences with new technologies around the globe? On October 17,2008 Brookings Senior FellowThomas Mann moderated a panel including Donetta DavidsonRoy SaltmanPatrick MerloePaul DeGregorio, and David Beirne.

Center For Inspired

Teaching

Catalogue for Philanthropy has recognized Inspired Teaching as one of the "Best Small Charities in the Washington, DC Region."

With the knowledge that teacher quality is the single greatest predictor of academic success, Center for Inspired Teaching advocates for true educational reform by challenging the way teachers see themselves, the way they understand children's learning, and the way they teach.

Through in-depth training offered in several programs, teachers develop student self-discipline so that precious time can be spent learning rather than disciplining, building higher-order critical thinking skills, and making sure students feel safe in the classroom - transforming low-achieving schools into high-achieving centers of learning. Annual principal and teacher institutes rejuvenate veteran educators who return home to manage schools effectively and create dynamic learning environments for their students.

A fast-growing, entrepreneurial organization with a big vision (its founder was recognized with a prestigious Ashoka Fellowship), Inspired Teaching is more in demand than ever and wants to expand so that it can reach even more local educators. Do you want to see lasting, systemic change in our schools? Then please help Inspired Teaching meet the growing demand for its critical services.
